I found this article about celebrities that have been know to be very generous tippers. While I am sure this isn’t the most scientific data, it is still nice to see that some of those Hollywood folks are good tippers.

10 big-tipping celebrities

10. Dan Aykroyd

According to one waitress at a resturaunt that Dan is a regular at, he normally leaves either $100 or 50% of the tab – whichever is larger.

9. Barack Obama

Apparently, Barack made this list because he “paid for a $2 beer with a twenty, and told the bartender to keep what was left over.”

8. Bill Murray

“One waiter reports that not only is Bill Murray a big tipper — reportedly throwing down a 120 percent tip on top of a $60 check”

7. Drew Barrymore

The Ugly Betty star Ana Ortiz served as a bartender before she began to make in the entertainment world, and she has said that Drew Barrymore would “double up the bill, tipping 100 percent”.

6. Russell Crowe

Apparently, “while on vacation in South Wales, Crowe stopped by the Carew Inn in Tenby for a quick pint with friends, and ended up leaving a £600 tip.”

5. Drew Carey

From working as a waiter in college, I remember that when certain people walked into the restaurant everyone wanted to serve them because they always left fantastic tips. Drew Carey seems to have earned that reputation. One account stated that, “He dined at Arnie Morton steakhouse in Los Angeles, racking up a $250 tab. On top of that, he plunked down a $400 tip.”

4. Hulk Hogan

“The Hulkster, who is reportedly both generous and down to earth, is another waiters’ favorite. One South Florida server claims that Hogan not only tipped $80 on a $120 ticket, but he also took the time to take pictures and sign autographs with fans among the restaurant staff after eating.”

3. Charlie Sheen

During his daughters 16th birthday party, Charlie tipped out $200 to each worker on the event staff to show his appreciation.

2. David Beckham

David Beckham is remembered by one waitress for tipping $900 on a $100 tab.

1. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp also has a similar story of exuberance. Depp showed his appreciation to a waitress by leaving an extra $4,000 tip on top of the $4,400 bill. By the way, how do you have a $4,400 bill at a restaurant?

Have you heard any stories of other celebrities and their generosity?

Funny to see this list, guess it’s nice to know rich celebrities

It’s easy to have a $4,400 restaurant bill – wine. I can find Chateau Latour 2003 at $1,300 a bottle from an online shop. Add the normal restaurant markup and it would easily be over $2,000 a bottle.

Does a $4,400 restaurant bill taste better than mom’s free home cookin’?
And does a $2,000 bottle of wine taste better than my usual Yellowtale?

Maybe, but I think I’ll stay on the road to financial independence by learning how to manage my money and not blowing a months wages on dinner. One Dinner!? Are you sure that wasn’t a years tab?

Cheers,

Guy

Bob, you deserve a real thumbs up for posting this story. Celebrity bashing is a common participation sport, regrettably even and often especially in the Christian community.

While it’s no doubt that a lot of celebrities are most definately “out there” with their behavior and lifestyles, we shouldn’t paint with so broad a brush, especially as Christians. There’s some good in all of us, and certainly leaving very generous tips to people who may not be important in their lives qualifies as an act of kindness that needs to be commended.

We might want to put aside the obvious excess of it all too, since that’s kind of normal in the world they live in. It’s still an expression of generosity. I’d be more disturbed if we found out about a $4400 restaruant bill with a $200 tip. Now THAT would be something to complain about.

Thanks Kevin, while I don’t always succeed, I prefer to go for the “light a candle, rather than cursing the darkness” approach…

It is easy to tip when you are rich! I guess I don’t get why this info. is pertinent or helpful, but yeah for those who are blessed by generosity. Being in the know with celebrities is of little interest to my husband or I. Very few celebrities show the kind of character & values that we feel are important so we do not encourage our sons to get caught up in it. So I suppose I will be dubbed a dissenter, but I will say that of all your posts Bob, this is my least favorite. Normally, I love to read what you share and truly appreciate your financial information. I have been blessed greatly and have used what I learn many times over. Thank you!

Cory,
yea I agree it isn’t really info, per se, but I do find it encouraging when I see people blessing others – regardless of who they are. But as discussed a few comments earlier, our society is so into bashing celebrities, that I thought it would be nice to shine a light on some of their good deeds. But, you don’t have to worry CPF won’t become a celebrity gossip site any time soon ;)

I want to go to the bar Obama was at. I don’t think it’s possible to get a beer for $2 at a bar in Milwaukee.
