Are you doing what you were called to do?
I believe that every human being on the face of the earth has a reason for being here. I also believe that each person has unique giftings and capabilities that they are given in order to fulfill their calling. I am sure there are many people out there who are not doing what they are “supposed” to be doing with their life. On the other hand, it is usually very obvious when someone is doing what they were called to do.
The challenge that comes into play is that most of our society is led by money rather than their calling. Most people just always go after whatever job they can get right now that pays more money than they currently make. I admire the ones who turn down job opportunites because they realize that having a job they enjoy is worth more than a higher paycheck. But, I really admire the people who go after something (hopefully their calling) and make that the priority over the short term satisfaction of having a comfortable salary.
Kurt Cobain was living out of his car the day his album Nevermind (one of the biggest albums of the 90’s) was released. Mother Theresa passed up countless opportunities that would have been more comfortable for her to do what she was called to do. Most big name Hollywood actors have interesting stories of the struggles they had to go through to get to where they are. The list goes on and on of people who are NOW reaping the rewards of what they paid the price for in the earlier years.
The fact is that most people who really fulfill their calling are not motivated by money. They are the ones who turn down job offers to make twice as much as they do now because they have this burning desire to do what they were born to do.
I really believe that no amount of fame, money, or success will satisfy. True satisfaction comes from doing what you know you were created to do. Ironically, the people who make this the priority over money, are normally the ones who make so much of it.

Wonderful article. I recently read a book by Dan Miller called 48 Days to the Work you love (visit 48days.com for more info). Dan’s book focuses on how to find you calling and what you love to do. He also explores the topic of when you do what you love doing (i.e. called to do), money finds you.
I’d highly recommend Dan’s book along with Purpose Driven Life. Both of these books explore this concept in a great amount of detail, and caused a pretty big change in the way I approach things. Reading these books, the Bible, and through a lot of prayer are what led me to start my blog. So far I am having a blast.
Thanks Bob, great article.
I think this scripture shows us how to do what you’re talking about.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
@Rose - good verse, I agree and also Matthew 6.33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
