5 Bible verses about money every Christian should know

11.03.2008

Let me start by saying that it was difficult to create this list. Think about it, I am trying to pick the best verses from the Bible about a particular topic. Are there really best verses, or are there just those that have impacted us more than others? I tend to think the latter. So, this list is just that. These are the 5 verses that, even as I just scratch the surface of understanding them, have revolutionized my financial life. Each one of them has had a strong impact on many decisions in my life. I hope you allow them to impact you as well.

Encouragement from Charles Capps

10.29.2008

This is a letter from Annette Capps, who I believe is the daughter of Charles. Since it is my personal mission to offset as much of the negativity currently in the news cycle as possible, I thought this letter would fit perfect. Thanks Annette!

Biblical retirement

10.27.2008

Bible verses about retirement and resting: While the Bible doesn’t seem to have specific verses referring to retirement, it does point out the importance of rest. God, our creator, understands the value of rest and relaxation. That, of course, is why He created Sundays! To add to that… Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. Mark 6:31

The Biblical Prosperity debate

10.20.2008

I have read a few articles recently discussing biblical prosperity and I am just getting a little bit frustrated with the whole thing. On one side you have people who insist on being poor because they think that it is more righteous to do so and on the other I am finding some people so caught up in storing up treasures for themselves on earth, that they are missing God’s plan for their life.

Encouraging Bible Verses

10.16.2008

Everyone needs a bit of encouragement from time to time. Thankfully, the Bible is full of encouraging verses! Even in the midst of the “financial crisis” that we are in the middle of, we can remain hopeful and encouraged if we keep trusting in God. I have found that the key is to finding specific Bible verses and meditating on them. According to the Word, this is how faith comes. The more we soak up the truth of God’s Word, the more assured we become that He really is going to take care of us!

Trusting God, not circumstances

10.13.2008

Trusting God in the midst of bad circumstances… I should be just as confident that things are going to work out when they look crazy as when everything looks fine and dandy. The opposite is true as well. Even though things look peaceful and calm, that is not an indication of security. Our security comes from God. It is not at all dependent on what is going on around us. Whether it is the economy, our finances, our children, our marriages, we can (and should) trust God with all of it.

Obeying God and pursuing financial success

10.11.2008

My Struggle To Pursue Financial Success While Obeying God At The Same Time… What I came to realize is that God doesn’t care about how much money is or isn’t in my bank account. He cares where my heart is. If my heart is set on the pursuit of money before Him, then I will be blind to the Holy Spirit’s leading in my life. An idol before God will set me up for serious disaster in all other areas of my life as it prevents intimacy between God and I. I must keep this this potential idol in check. I must retain an eternal perspective on money and God’s purpose for my life. I have realized that being responsible with the financial blessings God has given me is not a bad thing, rather it is essential that I am a responsible and disciplined steward of my money. In fact, only when I am being a responsible steward of God’s money do I stand of chance of fighting money as an idol in my life. So, what does this actually look like in our lives? I’d like to share three guidelines that I am striving to consistently live by:

Can you fit through the eye of a needle?

10.07.2008

Ah, you know the verse. It’s the one that people love to quote when they are trying to prove that Christians should be poor because it appears to be more righteous. Well, is it really? “For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Let’s look at the definition of “rich,” and see who qualifies.

Tithing in the new testament

09.30.2008

All about tithing in the new testament… Some say it was only an Old Testament Law that doesn’t need to be followed as believers under the New Covenant. And some say that it is just a relevant to New Testament Christians as it was in the Old Covenant.

The hardest financial habit to break

09.17.2008

Breaking the habit of discontentment… I was recently asked what the most difficult habit to break was as I started getting my finances in order. I think for me, it was breaking the habit of discontentment. I used to see something I wanted and I would want it so bad that I would not be happy until I got it. It has taken a while to break this bad habit and replace it with a good one, but I really believe it has been one of the most valuable moves I made…

Are you a good steward?

09.07.2008

Stewards are mentioned in the Bible quite a bit actually (you can read more about stewardship verses.) The basic message that I have gotten from the Bible about being a good steward is that God has entrusted me with things down here on earth and it is my responsibility to do something good with them.

My tithing experience

08.24.2008

I don’t exactly remember when I started to tithe – probably about 7-8 years ago. But I do remember getting a new job that was nearly double my previous income and thinking, “Wow, so this is the result of tithing.” It was a helpful lesson to me since I was, like most, skeptical about the whole thing. I had heard about all the scandals with TV preachers and kind of grew up with a cynical attitude towards giving to the church. Somewhere along the line I decided to “take a chance” and try it out.
