Can't say enough about choosing the right insurance when it comes to managing medical bills. I was switched from a HMO to a PPO and went from paying the occasional copay to 20% out of pocket for all bills. With the cost of individual insurance being sky high, I'd say you'd better have an employer with a decent plan or lots of buffer funds to separate you from disaster.

I couldn't agree more that understanding your coverages and checking over your bill several times to ensure accuracy is a MUST. My wife was in the hospital for several months one year and once it was all said and done we had racked up over $700,000 in medical bills. Thankfully we only had our deductibles up to the out-of-pocket max, but I found several errors of missbilling and double billing on part of the hospital. And you want to find it prior to your insurance company paying twice or as soon as possible because it can take acts of congress to get it corrected.

I'd like to add to make sure you understand the benefits of your medical insurance, in/out network, flex spending, and reimbursement accounts!

We have a new service provider through my job and when I injured my knee the result was an emergency room visit, 4 physical therapy sessions, 3 ultra sounds, 2 visits to sports medicine and a few x-rays.

Before the initial emergency room visit I called to see what I had in my account, and to get the bottom line on any out of pocket expenses.

To make a long story short I was told my HRA would be auto deduted and I would not have any out of pocket expenses.

Imaging my surprise when I got a $700 bill!!!!

The good news is I was able to get this portion paid by the insurance provider, but I had to spend plenty of time on the phone getting done what I was told would be automatic.

Also, if I didn't pay attention to my bills (something I recently started doing) I would have missed $700 in medical bills that would have made an ugly impression on my credit report
