Is buying the iPhone a sin?

I had an inpromptu interview from thestreet.com about this video. I am on a quest to prove that this is not what Christianity looks like. Watch it only if you must…

Of course that’s not Christianity. Buying an iPhone doesn’t send you to hell. The “reverend” tells no one how to avoid hell, quotes no scripture that I could see, and does not reason with anyone (as Paul did). He is a crank and a self-promoter, putting attention on himself instead of Jesus.

The thing is, everyone knows this isn’t serious Christianty, and the site calling attention to it is only interested in controversy, not in fact. It would be more beneficial to see the much larger group of Christians (much larger than two) feeding the hungry in Zimbabwe - people who are using iPhones and whatever technology is available to them in order to help people and change lives.

@Cory, remember, this is edited video. He may have attempted to preach the gospel, but from the statements made it sounded more like bondage and legalism than gracious Christianity. I like it that the translator’s shirt was an Air Jordan shirt. He should have bought a t-shirt at Wal-Mart for $5.00 and spent the difference on food for the poor based on their statements of the iPhone alone :)

@randy
you are right that it was edited, so in all fairness they could have been trying to make them look bad. But from everything that these guys gave them to work with - it didn’t take much work.

when I was watching it, I was trying to figure out if it was a joke. Those two don’t look like the “typical” people who do something like that. I gave up on trying to figure people out a long time ago ;)

@Randy - well put. And that reminds me that the people at The Street could be even less about substance than I originally thought. It’s also a reminder to any Christian who has a camera in front of him/her to speak and act in a way that cannot be misconstrued.

Hi There,
I am first time poster here and I submitted the video to Bob as I often quote him in my own blog round up. I appreciate that the media often skews left when Christianity is presented in the news.

In the case of the iPhone video, we had actually gone to NY store to see what the people in line had to say about purchasing (we run a personal finance website). When we arrived, these two men took center stage.

I contacted Bob b/c as a writer of Christian personal finance blog, I was curious how this would be perceived.I personally don’t endorse the purchasing of an iPhone b/c I think it is not a necessity.

I appreciate your candor.

@Amanda
thanks for stopping by to clarify some of these details…

orchidlover2000 @ 11:20 am

This is just like the right or left wing media to skew everyone. Whenever they aren’t busy skewing things, then they’re promoting anti-family agendas and it really grinds my gears. If they really loved the lord they’d let the entire video run and not edit it like a bunch of communists.

Let me ask you this, did Jesus edit the bible???

(no, by the way… the answer is no)

Think about it.

The guy’s obviously a hysterical crank, but some of the prophets were called the same. Anyway, the real question is not about this guy, but the title of this post, “Is buying an iPhone a sin?” In general, I find it hard to justify buying the very latest technology because it is so clearly not the most cost effective option–my guess is that only very few people actually have need of the most advanced features. Buying something exhorbitantly expensive because it’s fashionable or exciting (which is at least how the iPhone owners I know have explained their purchases to me) seems like an example of greed and pride, which are called deadly sins.

orchidlover2000 @ 12:11 pm

Agreed. I don’t even own a computer because it is too expensive. And that is money I could use to teach homeless people to swim. No computers, no phones, no mail whatsoever. I know what you’re asking yourself, “Well then wait a minute Mr. Bigshot, then how did you type these comments?”

Good question.

Through prayer.

Moving on, I agree that this guy is very likely a prophet. He may actually be Jesus… I dunno… I’m just saying… he’s probably Jesus’s son.

Anyhow, I’m not surprised by the media agenda at work here. Does anyone really think it’s a coincidence that Jesus’s birthday falls on the same day as Christmas, and that the iPhone seems to come out that very same year!

Think about it. It’s consumerism and the medias absolute fear of homeless people one day learning to swim.

Tim Huegerich @ 5:55 pm

You could have used a computer at a public library. (:

I’m using a computer I own, however. All I’m saying is that these are difficult questions for us Christians, what is necessary and what is extravagant. Here’s a take on it that I like: http://www.cjd.org/paper/roots/rpoverty.html

I’m pretty sure the bible says something about Jews running the media… Is that true? Did Jesus say that? I think maybe he did. Or is that just another product of media using their agendas against good church going, and tithing Christians?

But I agree Tim, these are difficult questions for us Christians… like same sex marriage… I mean, what’s next? Ya know, like, will they start allowing Calico cats to marry sandwiches? Cuz I seriously won’t put up with that. Calico cats marrying sandwiches. I mean, how would that even work.

I’m just gonna keep on rockin’ and rollin’.

Tim Huegerich @ 10:53 pm

? If your goal is to confuse me, you’re good. :) I’m done.
