I was surprised to see this post from last fall and thought I would ask you to please research a little further. I am on the mailing list of one of these stores and they sent out an email saying that this story is a rumor. It went out as an email last year and is considered false. Also, at least 3 of the stores you list have recently opened new stores in our area. I'm not sure who is right here, but it would seem to merit some research before posting something which could be so potentially damaging to a business. Perhaps I am wrong and these stores are in trouble, but I know of one which is vehemently denying this, so thought I would ask. Thanks for your blog. It is very encouraging to me.

Goodness. That is an extensive list! It also includes some of my favorite stores. No gift cards for me though, so I'll be ok.

Wow. This is a clear demonstration of the effects of consumerism, overexpansion, and everything else that comes with easy credit.

Thanks for the post. I would suggest that as time goes by that customers (a) review with the store if the cards are still accepted. There have been issues with that sort of thing, and (b) remember that when companies go out of business, often times they bring in a consulting company to actually reprice HIGHER... and then declare a "going out of business sale" to get people in the door. Remember, these guys have vendors and employees to pay off so they are still after the revenue. So make sure that what you are buying is really a bargain. And finally (c), make sure that you check out the company websites. If they have an online store, sometimes there you can actually find good bargains because they are trying to get the inventory out of th warehouse.
