Pros and cons of buying vs. apartment renting

05.13.2009

As I mentioned earlier this year, we are going to be buying our first house this year and will be taking advantage of the $8000 tax credit. In our most recent newsletter from our apartment complex, they provided us with some renting vs. owning propaganda. It is pretty funny hearing the rent vs. buy arguments [...]

Should college students be issued credit cards?

05.06.2009

Should credit cards be issued to college students? If you use the fire analogy that people often do when referring to credit cards, then parents should be teaching their kids how to use the credit cards (fire) rather than what actually happens to many college students. I remember walking around my college campus during orientation and seeing credit card booths everywhere giving out free t-shirts if you signed up for a card! Woo Hoo!

Dave Ramsey on saving money for college

03.21.2009

Saving money for college vs. retirement …I will say that I completely agree with Dave about this. His stance has always been to save first for retirement and if you have that covered then work on saving for the kids’ college. The simple point is that (worst case) you can take loans for college expenses at reasonable interest rates. While Visa and Mastercard are the only ones offering “Retirement Loans” at 25%. Thinking about it in those terms makes it pretty easy to decide.

Having family budgeting troubles?

03.09.2009

I was just watching a Financial Peace DVD yesterday and Dave Ramsey had a really good tip for those having family budgeting troubles. As we all know, finances cause the majority of problems in marriage, and as someone said in the video, when a husband and wife are in agreement about money, everything else seems to fall in line.

Do you have nicknames for your grandparents?

03.08.2009

As you may be able to tell, I lean towards “boring” names like “grandpa” and “grandma”, but then of course they have to be defined further by adding a last name as a descriptor – which takes too much times she says…

Do newlyweds need life insurance?

02.08.2009

My wife and I recently revisited a conversation that we have every once in a while about life insurance. We probably wouldn’t be considered newlyweds since we have been married almost four years, but are still living a newlywed lifestyle. We are still renting an apartment (we will be buying later this year), don’t have kids, and are enjoying the benefits of having few responsibilities while it lasts! ;)

How to create lifelong memories

01.11.2009

Pictures stir up memories I still remember being a kid (yes, that is me in the picture) and my mom telling me to smile for pictures. … Like a good mom, she made me smile and tried to convince me that they would mean something to me someday.Bobby 4 years 1985.jpg I don’t know if it is because I am older, but I am starting to realize the value of making memories. … Memories are more valuable than money Having watched my parents go through some challenging times financially when I was younger, I appreciate that they were just as interested in creating memories for us as they were filling the bank accounts.

10 free dates your wife will love

09.08.2008

Alright, I can’t guarantee that she will “love” all of them, I mean what kind of guy would I be if I completely understood women? ;) But, I am sure that she will at least love some of them, depending on the type of lady you have. By “date” I am referring to anything you can do alone for a couple hours with your significant other. If you have kids, you might just have to bite the bullet and pay a sitter for a couple of hours, but at least the date itself can be free! I have found that creativity is often the source of the most fun and it doesn’t cost a thing! On the other hand you can often spend a lot of money doing the same-old-thing and not have any fun. These are a few ideas that have worked for us.

My five favorite quotes from Warren Buffett

08.12.2008

These are my thoughts about my five favorite quotes from Warren Buffett… “Do business with people you like and who share your objectives.”Isn’t there more to life than money? I have met people who I wouldn’t work with for a million dollars, haven’t you? People are people and you will never be completely insulated from people who bug you, but if you are hiring them or choosing to work with them, they might as well be people you enjoy being around.

The rules of borrowing from friends

02.25.2008

This is the guideline that I try to follow in the rare instance when I do borrow from friends. Before I borrow anything from anyone I ask myself, “can I afford to replace this if I break or lose it?” Most of the time, I find I can do without or I decide that I would rather just buy the item myself.
